Game Artist Summary

The things I learned from my finding about become a Game Artist were What are the skills needed to become a Game Artist and it told me that I would have to be creative and have skill the be able to do that job. Second I looked for how much a Game Artist makes, and they roughly make about $41,500 a year it depends on how long you keep working. The third question I asked was 'what are some benefits?' and I found that a Game artist gets paid for how well they do the job, medical, and space to work. My fourth question was 'What does a game artist do' and it told me that a game artist mostly works on computers and puts color, texture, and mood into the game. The Fifth question was 'What do Game Artist need to know?' and I found out that do be a game artist you would have to know how to find mistakes and be able to fix them or work around them. Also to balance color and bring a flow to the artwork they present to the employer. The Sixth question was 'What are the employers looking for in an Artist?' so I looked it up and it said that employers are looking for experience and passion in the artist to do jobs. Seventh question was about 'what tools do artists use?' and its mostly apps on the computer and knowing traditional art before they consider trying to drawing on the computer. The eight question is asking 'What do you do with a degree in Game Art?' and to sum it down. Its saying that you can do anything that involves a computer and that you have experience. People are up to hire you if you have a degree than if you just do it with out an education or the know how. The most important facts I learned was that you wont make a lot of money in this career and that if you want to go down this road, it will be best that you have a back up career that you can fall back on. Because not many people make it in this career no mater how good they are. The thing I found that was most surprising was that even now girls get paid less in the gaming industry and in the outside world. And if you want to get into this career drawing has be able to come naturally to you because if it doesn't you wont make it. I can't really think of any more questions right now about this career, but I'm sure I can come up with some more later on. I don't really know how I feel about this career, but even so I feel confident that I may like to pursue it. If not I will go for teaching art or just visual arts.

Question 8

What can you do with a degree for game artists? A game artist can pursue some carriers that involve animation when they have a degree. In Art and Animation Degrees it says "Art schools, technical schools, and many traditional colleges offer Game Art & Animation degree programs. Students may choose to enroll in a B.A., B.S., M.A. or even an M.F.A. program. If they are interested in a career in Game Art & Animation they will need training in all areas of animation, multiple areas of art, acting, and game design" it also says "Game art & animation artists work in a variety of field’s filmmaking to gaming to advertising. Common job titles include game artist, 3D animator, 3D modeler, character artist, cinematic animator, concept artist, texture artist, user interface artist, world or environment artist, 2D background artist, art director, effects artist, lead artist, art director, storyboard artist, technical artist, and corporate training and development artist" (http://www.animationcareerreview.com/articles/game-art-animation-degrees-what-coursework-included-typical-game-art-animation-program). Here they have many choices to choose from if the artist wants to change their interest in style. In another site it tells the objectives of the degrees. So in Game Art and Animation Degree- UAT it says "Establish and defend an artistic style within their work based on sound artistic theories, practices and knowledge. Create and integrate into a video game environment 3D video game art assets and animation utilizing industry-standard software tools and techniques. Develop original assets for multiple video game platforms such as web, console, PC and handheld gaming platforms emphasizing the differences and similarities of each" and also "Working within confines of an industry-standard production pipeline, develop and modify video game art assets and animation. Build 3D video game animation utilizing techniques such as hand keying and motion capture to create blend poses, loops, retargeting animation and character rigging. Design art assets in order to facilitate the completion of a game project and implement a given game design" (http://majors.uat.edu/Game-Art/). Game artist have to use their knowledge that they gathered from collage to develope a game that players are willing and want to play. They have to find a style that suits them best and go with it. If they don't it won't really be their own work. What they do with their degree is what they are interested in and enjoy doing. Question 7

What are the tools used for game artists? The tools used for game artists are mostly on computers. But they are recommended to know traditional style drawing. In Game Hiring Articles by Marc Mencher says "This is the most sought after position for many artists thinking of going into the game industry. A solid background of anatomy, human and animal, will greatly benefit any character artist. A company/position may require the creation of character and world props besides just pure character creation. Character Artists develop 3D models using high or low polygonal techniques and often both" it also says that "3D models using high or low polygonal techniques and often both. Choice modeling tools are 3D Max, Maya, Modo or XSI combined with sculpting tools like ZBrush and Mudbox. Character Artists are usually required to create textures for their own models. Working well with Photoshop is a must" (http://www.gamerecruiter.com/writings/westwood/a02art.htm). This is for character artists that draw the styles of the people, creatures, and animals. These artists have to use different apps and programs to design their ideal character for the game being produced. In Game Art and Design Jobs it says "Game artists are responsible for all visual aspects of the game. They design characters using computer animation tools, and create the virtual world environment" (http://education-portal.com/articles/Game_Art_and_Design_Jobs_Options_Salary_Info_and_Requirements.html). It's saying in both sections that the artist have to have natural talent and the ability to use a computer. Question 5

What do Game Artists need to know? One of the things that Game Artists need to know are what is required of them. The plot of the game they are designing and what might work best with the story line. Also they would most defiantly need the education to do the job. The Game Career Guide says, " A video game artist or animator should study the basics of fine art: art theory, art history, composition, color, form, space, and light. Just because video game artists compose their work on computers does not exempt them from having to understand traditional art" another says "Artists who want to work in the video game industry should know Photoshop well enough to create a few pieces of original artwork with the program that can be included in their professional portfolio"(http://www.gamecareerguide.com/features/413/game_art_and_animation_an_introduction.php). They want someone who knows the difference between good video game design and poor video game design" Another quote from this site is "Another important attribute is good problem-solving skills. There are typically lots of challenges, bugs, and potential problems in designing a video game, ranging from collision detection to making things look convincing" (http://resources.courseadvisor.com/web-development/video-game-designer-job-description).
